On April 10, 1955, Tony DeMarco challenged Johnny Saxton for the World Welterweight Championship at the Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts.
The fight was a grueling, back-and-forth contest, with DeMarco applying relentless pressure on the defending champion. By the 14th round, DeMarco’s powerful body attack and constant aggression wore Saxton down, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
DeMarco won by TKO in round 14, capturing the world welterweight title and becoming a celebrated champion in his hometown of Boston. This victory was the highlight of DeMarco’s career and is still remembered as one of Boston boxing’s greatest nights.

After winning the opening round, DeMarco fell into the same trap many Saxton opponents fell into by allowing him to grapple, clinch and stall on the inside. The fight followed that pattern for several rounds, until DeMarco knocked Saxton's mouthpiece loose with a pair of well-placed punches in round 9.
In round 12, DeMarco wore Saxton down with his relentless offense until he actually seemed to punch himself out. And in the 13th, Saxton finally had nothing more to give, and the fight was stopped after Saxton took a sustained assault with his gloves down at his sides.
"I knew I had him when he went down in the 14th round. When he fell back through the ropes, I said to myself 'this is it'.
