Additional credit is given to publisher Irving Mills whose words were added to the song by Mitchell Parish. The words met with approval from Ellington, who described them as "wonderful—but not entirely fitted to my original conception". Beyond the Sea is a 1945 contemporary pop romantic love song by Jack Lawrence, with music taken from the song La Mer by Charles Trenet.
Trenet had composed La Mer (which means the Sea) with French lyrics. It had some differences to the English-language version that Lawrence later wrote. Trenets French version was a homage and ode to the changing moods of the sea, while Lawrence, by just adding one word Beyond to the title, gave him the start whereby he made the song into a love song.

The River Kwai March is a march composed by Malcolm Arnold in 1957. It was written as an orchestral counter-march to the Colonel Bogey March, which is whistled by the soldiers entering the prisoner camp in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai and again near the end of the film when the bridge is formally dedicated. The Arnold march re-appears (without the Colonel Bogey March) several times in the film and is repeated at the finale.
The two marches have been recorded together by Mitch Miller as March from the River Kwai - Colonel Bogey. Due to this, the Colonel Bogey March is often mis-credited as River Kwai March.")
