This video clip shows 180 slices from a subtomogram volume cropped from Brad Marsh's IVEM dataset of beta cell cytoplasm, rocking back and forth in Cinema 4D about a red cubic primitive for reference. The main "shadow" in the center is a transverse section from a mitochondria ~300nm in diameter. I haven't automated this protocol into a full blown plugin yet, but it shouldn't be too hard once I get some free time. You can adjust the transparency overall, or the white and black separately with some xpresso and coffee scripts I worked up... problem is that you can only see the front layer on the fly, so its not very useful for modeling. This may be fixed with enhanced viewport options, but I built and tested this on my laptop last year and I'm too lazy to pull it over to my desktop with the stronger graphics card.
