This week on Poetry Thursday, we’re tracing the road that runs through all of Middle-earth — Tolkien’s poem “The Road Goes Ever On.”
He didn’t just write it once.
He wrote it four times — across The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings — each version reshaped by age, experience, and sorrow.
In this episode, I’ll read all four versions in order, from Bilbo’s first walking song to his final farewell, and we’ll explore what changes… and what doesn’t.
In this video:
The Hobbit — Bilbo’s song of wonder and discovery
The Fellowship of the Ring — adventure turns to burden
The Return of the King — the poem’s final, quiet goodbye
How Tolkien used one poem to chart a lifetime of meaning
By the end, you’ll see how one road, one poem, and one author carry the heart of all his work.
