New River Gorge is America's newest National Park. It's less than 5 hours from my house and I'm kind of embarrassed I didn't visit it sooner. But, to find a National Park so intimately intertwined with it's previous land use history was a real treat. Thr scars that humans have left on this landscape are still very much present, but decades of conservation are beginning to heal those wounds. I love being able to experience things like that and be part of the history of a place that was once one thing, but has totally reinvented itself to be something completely new (and way better).
New River Gorge lives up to its reputation as an adventurer's paradise and I highly recommend getting out on the River here. Do a rafting trip and soak in everything that the New River was, is, and will be. See it all from the River's point of view. It's the best way to experience this park in my opinion.
