Attaching wooden balls or beads to the ends of wooden dowels can be a great technique for creating a variety of unique woodworking and DIY projects. The key to ensuring that the ball is securely attached and aligned with the dowel’s axis is to create a concavity at the tip of the dowel. In this video, I demonstrate a couple of failed attempts—first using a drill press, and then by designing a simple woodworking jig that I believe could be improved for better results. Finally, I show how, with a bit of steadiness and the use of a wood drill bit, a metal drill bit, and a round cutter, I manage to create nearly perfect concavities in the dowels. This allows me to glue the balls using gel quick adhesive, ensuring a strong bond and proper alignment with the dowels.
