After 12 long years of misery, Tajmir’s journey to freedom has finally begun 🐅✨
One month ago, our rescue team traveled to Czechia to meet tiger Tajmir for the very first time and carry out a visual check. The future member of the FOUR PAWS family had been temporarily taken in by a zoo after Czech authorities confiscated him from a case of horrible private keeping.
At the zoo, Tajmir now has the chance to rest, recover from stress, and receive — probably for the very first time in his life — proper food and care.
Although he is still too skinny, Tajmir seems to be doing well. However, we can only be certain after a full veterinary check under anesthesia.
✨ Once all the necessary paperwork is complete and Tajmir is strong enough to travel, he will embark on the journey to our FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands. There, he will finally receive the best species-appropriate care and leave his years of suffering behind. We cannot wait for this moment to arrive!
Until then — and beyond — there is something each of you can do to help big cats suffering in captivity and exploited for profit or entertainment:

Looking at Zora’s tired eyes behind metal bars - the reality of private keeping becomes impossible to ignore. Her space was restricted, her claws cruelly removed, her environment barren, her life reduced to waiting. 🦁🐾
FOUR PAWS estimates that at least 2,000 big cats are still kept in poor conditions across Europe. Many are housed in inadequate enclosures, lacking proper care, enrichment, and space. Even more concerning: in several countries, private ownership of big cats remains legal, despite the severe welfare risks. 🦁
On the rescue day, every detail mattered:
🚚 The careful preparation of the transport crate
👩⚕️ The expertise of the veterinary team ensuring her safety
🤝 The coordination and communication behind every movement
🦁 The specialised Big Cat Ambulance designed to
make her journey as comfortable as possible
As she was finally transferred into the crate, it marked not just a physical move, but the beginning of a new life at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary . ✨
Because rescues like this are not just about relocation.
They are about ending a cycle. 🔄
Private keeping often leads to:
⚠️ Inadequate housing and chronic stress
💔 Malnutrition and untreated illness
🔄 Stereotypical behaviours caused by confinement
🧬 Uncontrolled breeding and inbreeding
🚫 Animals with no viable future placement, sometimes leading to uncontrolled trade or killing
These are not isolated cases — they are systemic outcomes of a system that allows wild animals to be kept without the expertise or facilities they need.
At FELIDA, this lioness will finally have what she has been denied: space, professional care, medical attention, and the chance to recover - physically and mentally.
👉 Our work is necessary because the system still allows private keeping of big cats.
👉 Awareness is crucial, but so is stronger legislation. 📢
This rescue is one story.

After 23 long years in a tiny cage near a restaurant in Bled, Slovenia, bear Mici is finally rescued! Today, she enjoys a species-appropriate life in her forever home at BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach. 🌲
Just a month ago, our team embarked on a rescue mission to Slovenia to bring Mici to safety. Her owner agreed to voluntarily hand her over, and we immediately organized the rescue to give her the life she deserves. 🌸
When Mici arrived at the sanctuary, she was greeted by a magical winter wonderland – a blanket of snow covering her new home. For the first time ever, she can relax in a warm straw-filled den, something she never experienced in captivity. Seeing her settle in and start her new chapter is truly heartwarming! 💕
But our work isn’t done yet. Another bear, Tim, still lives in poor conditions in Slovenia. We urge his owner to follow Mici and Felix’s example and let Tim join us at the sanctuary. With your help, we can end the private captivity of bears in Slovenia once and for all – a milestone we’ve been dreaming of! 🇸🇮

Saying goodbye to our beloved bear, Mark, has been incredibly hard — but your kind words and heartfelt messages have meant the world to us. 💬
Rescued in 2022 from a tiny cage near a restaurant in Albania, Mark found peace at BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach. For three beautiful years, he explored his new home and was cared for by our devoted team.
Despite all the love and expert care, Mark’s health continued to decline. After thoughtful consultation, we made the compassionate decision to let him go. 🌈
Mark’s story touched so many hearts. He was gentle and he will forever live in our memories.

Everything is ready for Tims arrival. The only thing missing is Tim himself as his owner and the authorities are still blocking his relocation from Zoo park Rožman in Slovenia to our sanctuary in Austria! 🐻
While Tim still spends his days bored in an enclosure that’s far too small and offers no opportunity to dig, roam or hide, so much more would await him if he were given the chance to be relocated to us! Take a look inside BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach with our colleague Gerlinde Mairhofer and see the future that could be waiting for him. 💚
A spacious natural habitat. Room to roam. Soft ground to dig. Enrichment, expert care, and the freedom to behave like a real bear. 🌳
Everything is ready.
Our offer to relocate Tim still stands. We are ready to bring Tim at any time to BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach so that he can start over. But we cant do this as long as the owner and the authorities are preventing us from moving Tim.
While rescued bears Felix and Mici are finally enjoying the lives they deserve, Tim remains confined to a barren cage, denied the opportunity to live like a bear. 💔
Every day Tim spends at Zoo park Rožman in Slovenia is another day of unnecessary suffering.

After several intense days of veterinary assessments at the former Zoo Luján, watch this recap for a first check-in on some of our patients on-site. 🩺
In this reel:
🐯 You can see tigress Luna, who underwent surgery for a severe tail injury, slowly healing. She will remain on antibiotics and pain relief for a little longer, but she’s making steady progress.
🐻 Bear Gordo having bounced back beautifully from his assessment and continuing to show a lot of trust around the team.
🦁 Young lioness Lucy thriving, a standout for her healthy teeth and a glossy coat that speaks volumes about her condition - one of the rare cases amongst the other animals.
But not every case is straightforward. As one tiger struggled to recover from anaesthesia, he became dehydrated after lying down in the sun. Thanks to the quick thinking of our vets - and some creative rehydration methods - we can witness him back on his feet shortly after. ✨
With 32 patients treated by early November, this video celebrates the halfway point of the veterinary assessment, and we feel incredibly grateful to share this major success of the past weeks with you! 🙌

One year ago, we welcomed two very special lionesses to their forever home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. 🧡
Watching Illiana and Tomoyo play with their rescueversary enrichment, it’s hard to believe they spent so much of their lives in a circus trailer in France. From the circus ring to the safety of LIONSROCK, their journey has been one of incredible resilience.
Illiana, who lives with chronic kidney disease, continues to amaze us with her adaptability and spirit. She is on a treatment and diet plan and our team closely monitors her condition to ensure she receives the best care possible. 💕
Tomoyo, who underwent two much-needed dental treatments within the past year, is otherwise in good health and thriving in her environment. 🌳
Witnessing these two lionesses rediscover their natural instincts such as pouncing, exploring and relaxing on their platforms, shows us first-hand what recovery and healing look like. 🐾
