Previously it was thought that the only way to do this was while ducking, or by being in a boot, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I had an idea on some methods that could possibly work, and every single one of them did.
This is very much the same as how wall jumps work, where you must be either ducking, throwing an item, using a power-up or doing a dive bomb in order to jump.
In case anyone doesn't know, this is possible because the thwomp is still solid for 1 frame after it is killed by the star. This gives Mario 1 frame where it is possible to perform a jump.

This game is weird, lol. For whatever reason, placing a Brick Block, Rotating Block or ? Block at the top corner of a level will give Mario between 1-6 coins by throwing a shell over the block and it seemingly never runs out. It is also sometimes stopped by an invisible wall, or something.
PS, I hope this works in SMM2. Collect 100 coins, you say?
