The start of a new making cycle is always a fun moment. I’ve got a list of pots I need to throw, mugs, bowls and store jars, as these are the pots that make up a majority of the lots with multiple items in my restocks, yet I prefer getting my hands stuck in again by throwing some medium sized pots from around a kilogram of clay.
It always feels a little strange when sitting back on the wheel for the first time in a while. My hands are clunky and awkward and I’m definitely more prone to making mistakes but a days’ worth of throwing is typically enough to get that feeling of proficiency back and it’s all worth it for those few smooth pulls of the walls and lifting away light, even forms.
I used to always begin by making larger batches of the smaller pots but I think this time I’ll save those until the end when my hands are more practiced, perhaps I’ll be able to get through all that repetition faster that way.
How do you settle into making again after a long time away from the wheel?
