Whilst our two zoos are closed at the moment, our important conservation work has not stopped. Today is National Threatened Species Day, an important day on the calendar to raise awareness for our native threatened species, and to also share the efforts that are taking place to ensure the long-term survival of these species.
At Taronga Western Plains Zoo, we’ve been busy the past few years putting large-scale investment and development into growing our commitment to threatened species such as Regent Honeyeaters, Plains-wanderers and Greater Bilbies. We achieved amazing breeding results in 2020 and a real highlight was releasing 10 Greater Bilbies back into Sturt National Park after their absence from this area for more than 100 years. With future releases planned in the near future, we are well on our way to becoming a national leader in ex-situ conservation management and releasing and reintroductions back into the wild with the threatened species we manage in Dubbo.
