Today marks a new era for Taronga as we announce the establishment of our third site in Northern NSW. This site is one of the largest Box-gum Woodland rewilding sites in Australia – a landmark step in our conservation journey and a cornerstone of our Taronga Habitat Positive initiative.
The 3,050-hectare pilot site on the Northwest Slopes of NSW is 100 times larger than Taronga Zoo Sydney and will become a safe haven for up to 36 threatened species including Koalas, Platypus and Regent Honeyeaters. This site will see up to one million seedlings to be planted to reconnect the rivers to ranges and restore wildlife corridors vital for our native species 🌱
This project is the first of its kind for any zoo in the world and directly builds on Taronga’s century of conservation expertise and dedication to wildlife. We know it’s not enough to protect what’s left and that we need to be actively restoring habitat for these species to have a future and that’s why this is just the beginning of our vision to restore two million hectares of threatened Box Gum woodlands across eastern Australia.
This conservation initiative is supported by the NSW Government's $16 million seed funding and our inaugural corporate partner Sydney Airport, to build a sustainable model for long-term restoration. Their commitment to conservation and sustainability reflects a shared vision for protecting what makes Australia unique – our wildlife, our landscapes, and our future.
Habitat Positive is more than just habitat restoration. It's a new way of achieving landscape-scale restoration by leveraging natural capital investment through partnerships with government, industry, first nations communities, regional community, corporate Australia and philanthropists.
