STORYLINE:
Almost a year of Israel’s war in Gaza left thousands of children either orphaned or separated from their parents, grandparents in the embattled Palestinian enclave had to undertake the heavy task of raising them on their own.
Amir Ashour, 12, and his sister Fatima Ashour, 10, lost their parents and their 5-year-old brother Gheith when their house in Rafah was struck by the Israeli military in December 2023.
Amir and Fatima survived the strike and were pulled out from under the rubble by rescuers.
They are now being taken care of by their grandfather Atta Ashour, from their mother’s side, who said he will never be able to replace their parents.
The fight between Israel and Hamas broke out after the militants attacked southern Israel on Oct.7, 2023, killing around 1,200 Israelis and kidnapping some 250 others
The Israeli army launched a full-scale war across the Gaza Strip since then, killing over 41,000 Palestinians and injuring nearly 97,000 others, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Around 2 million people have been internally displaced, including thousands of children.
