"But the water, it just came so fast that literally in forty minutes this whole place was under this much of water. So even if you wanted to leave there was no getting out. It just happened that quick, so."

"I did my duct work around the doors the best I could and I had to evacuate. I live two blocks down and had no idea the devastation this would cause. It's just like what you see on TV."

"We've evacuated many, many times. I always do when we're mandatory evacuation but we've never I've never had any damage from a hurricane. This is the first one on the beach and I've been here 20 years."

"I didn't realize how powerful water was and when we came back every one of my coolers in this skinny little opening of the bar has just lifted right up from the water. Everything in here when I walked in, of course full with mud, we had to use shovels to get that out and then everything ended up down that way."

"And then you know outside in the lots it was just covered, covered. They had bulldozers trying to take the sand away. We're still just driving on dirt."

STORYLINE:
Hurricane Helene’s storm surge struck Florida fast and hard when it slammed into Gulf Coast communities near St. Petersburg.

Long-time residents had never seen anything like the 8-foot wall of water that pushed ashore last week, and that was the problem.


Some people still escaped the rising waters and others were rescued but 12 died from the surge.
