Film Score and More | THOR Re-Score - How To Train Your Dragon (HD) @FilmScoreandMore | Uploaded August 2019 | Updated October 2024, 7 minutes ago.
I’ve used HTTYD scores many times for re-score videos and I continue to plan more, but this time I was actually able to push for the Celtic and Viking-like sounds that normally don’t fit with other scenes.
I did try a more Nordic-sounding part of this same song (“Battling the Green Death,” linked below) over the same footage but I felt the pace just wasn’t working. This part of the song lacked focus and just didn’t build in the same way the final product did. It failed to build to that final blow against the Destroyer and instead kept reinventing itself, reprising other (admittedly Viking-like) themes and buying time. Because that’s what I was aiming for when I started this it was kind of tough to cut out, but it really just didn’t do as much for the scene as I hoped. And I do really like the musical shift when the tornado star in this final cut.
I had to cut a lot out of the clip to fit within the restraints of the music. The movie has better editing than this.
I also tried to fit the chorale bit from “Where’s Hiccup?” over Thor’s near-death but it wasn’t working so well. If I find a way to make it work I can upload the extended version.
Don’t get me wrong, I do still like Patrick Doyle’s Thor score, it just goes for something different; not the guttural male chorus but a more regal theme befitting an Asgardian prince and the ethereal golden world of Asgard floating on a disk in space created for this film.
A composer’s score should suit the director’s vision and the final product and that’s exactly what both of these scores do.
