The Coney Dog is widely considered the best chili dog in America, and the chili covering it isn't chili.
That deep red meat sauce you see on a Coney Dog is a Greek meat sauce built on cinnamon, allspice, and clove, brought over by Greek and Macedonian immigrants in the early 1900s who needed it to sound American, so they called it chili and nobody questioned it. The sausage is German. The sauce is Greek. The only natively American thing on this all-American gas station icon is literally just the word chili.
Oh, and the Coney Island dog isn't from Coney Island. It's from Michigan.
In this episode I'm tracing the full history of the chili dog, from German immigrants slinging sausages in every city at once, to Greek families opening food carts and accidentally starting one of America's great regional food wars, to two brothers from the same Greek village who opened competing hot dog stands right next door to each other in Detroit on purpose, and have been at war ever since. Then we make the real thing from scratch, beef heart and all.
