My Sovol Tool Changer is FINALLY done-ish. Was it worth it? It's complicated.
Brought to you by Sovol. Check out their new 7-toolheaded IDEX tool changer - the Sovol M1D: jle.vi/m1d

Two years ago, a few friends and I set out to build something money couldn't buy: a no-limits, 7 tool changer monster based on the Sovol SV08. Then, right as we were about to finish it, Sovol announced their own commercially available 7 tool changer 3d printer for just $1,400.

So... was it worth it?

From redesigns of the stealthchanger files and failed parts to Klipper firmware headaches and the occasional glimpse of success, this project has been equal parts engineering challenge and exercise in stubbornness. More importantly, it forced me to rethink something I thought I already knew: when does it make sense to build something like this yourself, and when are you better off waiting for the box to show up?

My goal with this video is not to talk you out of building a diy tool changer 3d printer (or any open source 3d printer project). I just want to make sure you go into it with the right reasons (and the right expectations), before you blow 2 years and thousands of dollars trying to build something that, at the end of the day, may not outperform something like the Sovol M1D. I DO still think there are plenty of good reasons to build a custom 3d printer or customize something like a voron, a sovol sv08, or a sovol sv08 max - I just think they aren't the reasons you might be expecting.

Let's get after it.
