The tiny tardigrade can survive being frozen at -272° Celsius, being exposed to the vacuum of outer space and even being blasted with 500 times the dose of X-rays that would kill a human, and it could teach us how to handle the rigours of space travel!
These dust-mite-sized marvelâs indestructibility stems from its adaptations to its environment.
At least two species of tardigrade produce a unique protein- a âdamage suppressor,â that binds to DNA and may physically shield it from reactive forms of oxygen!
Emulating tardigrades could one day help humans colonise outer space. Food crops, yeast and insects could be engineered to produce tardigrade proteins, allowing them to grow more efficiently on spacecraft where levels of radiation are elevated compared with Earth.
Scientists have already inserted the gene for the damage suppressing protein into human cells in the lab, with many of them surviving levels of X-rays or peroxide chemicals that kill ordinary cells.
Plus plants with this extra gene grew more quickly than those without it, and incurred less DNA damage when exposed to ultraviolet radiation!
