In 1916, an American astronomer, Edward Emerson Barnard discovered a star 5.95 light-years away from the earth in the constellation of Ophiuchus. It was a red dwarf star, which he named as Barnard’s star. Later in 2018, scientists discovered that, it is not just a star, but a star system because it has a planet revolving around it. Scientists named it as Barnard b. They further discovered some amazing facts like
- It is the second nearest star system to the Earth as Proxima Centauri star system contains the first spot in the list.
- The planet also known as super-earth because it is 3.2 times heavier than the Earth and orbits its star with a period of 233 days.
- As it lies outside Barnard Star's presumed habitable zone. Therefore, any water on its surface would likely be frozen.
- This Barnard star system is one of the fastest moving star system that we have ever discovered and is approaching towards our sun at a speed of about 110Km/sec (68miles/sec).
- By the year 11,800, it will surpass Proxima Centauri to become the closest star system to earth, at just the distance of about 3.85 light-years away.
