Open tunings aren’t just for slide—they’re one of the best tools guitarists can use to break out of creative ruts and rediscover their sound, and few players are as incredible at using them as Nico Bereciartua of The Black Crowes.
In this Gibson Gear Guide clip, Nico Bereciartua of The Black Crowes sits down with Dinesh Lekhraj to explore the magic of Open D tuning. Though best known in the blues and rock world for their use by players like Elmore James, Peter Green, and Jimmy Page, open tunings are also a gateway to unlock creativity and really expand your sound, especially if you have a little writer’s block.
Nico explains how he first got into open tunings to play slide guitar, but quickly realized how powerful they are as a compositional tool. “Sometimes you get stuck… and bored of playing the same chords,” he says. But open tuning—with its ringing, droning qualities—can bring out ideas you wouldn’t find otherwise and really open up some cool riffs. “You’re playing like a harmony, but you always have… the open D,” he adds.
