If your horse won’t go forward, feels lazy, hesitant or shut down, this video will help. Today I’m working with Willi, who used to struggle with forward, and I’m showing how rewarding the thought — before the feet even move — creates willingness.
This simple trick makes horses WANT to go forward. In this video, I show you how rewarding the very first thought — even before the feet move — builds willingness instead of obedience, and helps horses that feel lazy, stuck, or shut down start offering forward again.
When Willi the Gypsy Cob first came to me, he wouldn’t offer forward at all. He was labelled lazy and naughty, but like most horses, he wasn’t either. He was simply confused and shut down, and doing nothing felt like the safest option. That’s why I start by rewarding the smallest try — a look, a shift, a thought — so the horse understands that I see them, I’m listening, and they can trust my body language.
In this session, I take you step-by-step through how I teach “go from the ground,” how I release the exact moment the horse decides to move, and how rewarding small tries help the horse build confidence, clarity, and a genuine willingness to try again.
You’ll see how I use energy, intention, and timing to show Willi what I want, how I open the door for him, and how one trot step or even one canter step is enough in the early stages. This work isn’t about pushing or chasing the horse — it’s about creating understanding.
