A private island, built one floating platform at a time.
For more than 30 years, artists Catherine King and Wayne Adams have been creating Freedom Cove, a self-built floating world off the coast of Vancouver Island. What began as a desire to live closer to nature has grown into 12 connected platforms with greenhouses, an art gallery, a dance floor, a lighthouse and the home where they raised their family.
There are no roads here. The nearest town is roughly 45 minutes away by boat. They collect water, grow their own food, fish the surrounding waters and make a living through their art.
Part home, part studio, part ongoing experiment in self-sufficiency, Freedom Cove makes a pretty convincing case that “home” can be whatever you’re willing to build.
