Your character sheet is not your weapon. In B/X Dungeons and Dragons, a first-level character can die to a single bad roll — and no amount of Strength score will change that. But there's a category of gear on the B/X equipment list that most players skip entirely, and it's the reason experienced old-school players survive dungeons that kill everyone else.
In this video I break down five pieces of mundane gear — iron spikes, chalk, a pocket mirror, twine, and a bag of marbles — and show exactly how each one bypasses traps, controls the environment, and keeps your party alive without a single dice roll.
This is the core of old-school RPG play: player skill over character stats. No saving throws. No skill checks. Just your brain and ten gold pieces worth of equipment.
