How you roll character stats sets the tone of the whole campaign. B/X's 3d6 down the line and AD&D's generous stat-rolling methods are two opposite bets on what D&D is supposed to feel like — this is the real difference, and why it matters at your table in 2026.

B/X locks character generation to a straight 3d6, six times, in order — the only relief valve is a one-point prime requisite swap. AD&D hands you a menu of generous methods instead, and for good reason: paladins, rangers, and multiclassed demi-humans need stat spreads a straight roll almost never produces. Two systems, two completely different bets on what "hero" means at the table.
