Andronikus I Komnenos was a monster who was called ‘The Hater of Light’ because he had so many enemies blinded. He became the Byzantine emperor after he ordered the ‘Massacre of the Latins’ in 1182, where thousands of men, women and children were slaughtered. He then had his 12 year old cousin Emperor Alexios II beheaded, his sister poisoned and his mother strangled to gain power, before at the age of 63 he married the boy's 12 year old widow. Two years later he was deposed in a coup, captured and handed over to the mob. He was tied up, kicked, slapped and had his right hand cut off. Boiling water was thrown in his face, one of his eyes was gouged out. Faeces was shoved up his nose and urine was poured into his remaining eye. After three days of torture he was suspended upside down at the Hippodrome of Constantinople and his body was torn apart.
