Although it can be described as a form of torture there was no going back once this gruesome process began, so it was really just a slower method of medieval execution. The conscious prisoner's arms and legs were fastened to a table and an incision was made in the stomach, just large enough for the torturer to reach his hand inside. A hook which was connected to a crank was attached to the top part of the intestine and then rotated. The helpless victim could only watch and scream in horror as their guts were pulled through the opening and they were slowly disembowelled. In the end there could be up to 18 feet of entrails wrapped around the crankshaft. Death was caused by blood loss, extreme pain and shock. No one survived the brutal and cruel procedure.
