The Grade II-listed public toilets near Bruce Grove station in Tottenham, London, have been restored and reopened. The building now has a café, community space and new public toilets.
The below-ground toilets and decorative iron railings were originally constructed in 1910 and provided facilities for both men and women, which was rare for the time. The cottage-style pavilion was added in the 1920s to provide additional loos for women, in line with campaigns for better public facilities that allowed greater independence and freedom of travel for women.
The building fell out of use in the 1980s and became derelict. Funding from the Greater London Authority, Historic England, and Haringey Council, via the Tottenham High Street Heritage Action Zone, kick-started the renovation project.
The site has been carefully reconfigured by architectural practice DK-CM with a new extension and lift, and its original features restored. The building is now let to Dubai Coffee on a ‘social value’ lease to ensure it benefits the community.
