In today’s video on Gulf Coast Knapping, I take on a massive tab of slick Kentucky hornstone chert and reduce it down into a wide biface. This material is incredibly glassy — it cuts clean, but it will also punish bad platform prep.

You’ll see the full reduction process:
• Reading the rock
• Managing thick cortex
• Setting up strong percussion platforms
• Controlling long thinning flakes
• Keeping width while thinning

Kentucky hornstone can behave almost like obsidian when it’s this slick — but it still demands proper edge preparation and angle control. If you enjoy watching large raw stone get tamed into a clean biface, this one’s for you.

If you’re learning to flintknap, pay attention to how I:
– Establish my first platforms
– Correct hinge fractures
– Adjust swing force for thicker mass
– Maintain symmetry during early reduction

Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. More coral, hornstone, and flint ridge builds coming soon.
