Parker Cannon of The Story So Far Hates His Fans. Why?
What is going on my dang mates! I hope everyone has been good, I skipped a day of uploading to give myself a rest, but to be honest the “rest” wasn’t really rest, it was just a ruse to allow myself to spend more time working on this video. I have a problem with allowing myself to rest. I don’t even know why I’m putting this, does anyone actually read this? I do on certain YouTuber’s descriptions, so if you read this comment below or something.
Parker Cannon, frontman of Walnut Creek, California pop punk band, The Story So Far, has been a prominent figure in the pop punk genre for the better part of a decade. The band formed in winter of 2007 and the rest is history. They’ve hit the ground running ever since. They inked a deal with Pure Noise Records to put out their debut, critically-acclaimed album, “Under Soil and Dirt” in Spring of 2011. The album put them on the map and earned them a ravenous fanbase, ready to devour their masterpiece of a sophomore effort titled “What You Don’t See” released March, two years after Under Soil and Dirt. Parker Cannon and the boys in The Story So Far had done it. Parker and TSSF had become a household name.. if your house is full of people that enjoyed pop punk. Parker Cannon, Will Levy, Kevin Geyer, Ryan Torf, and Kelen Capener had achieved nothing short of their absolute most wild dreams.
The Story So Far went on to tour with big names in the industry such as Say Anything and Coheed and Cambria. After months and months on the road, they sat down to write their next record, which would be called “The Story So Far” making it their self-titled album. This makes no sense but I feel like every successful band does this at some point in their career. Their s/t album felt repetitive and dull to me (I get a lot of heat for that opinion ) but I had not lost faith in the band, this just felt like an off album to me.
In the years post 2015, the band seemed quiet. Sure, they were still touring, but the band as well as band members were significantly less-active on social media, the live shows seemed to lack that punch and excitement, it just sort of felt like they were going through the motions.
In late 2017, early 2018, Parker Cannon of The Story So Far comes forward about his opiate addiction, specifically lean, or codeine cough syrup. Which didn’t exactly come as a surprise to me considering their single released earlier in 2017 had Cannon belting out lyrics “My appropriate opiate has me out of it out of it” He stated this was due to apathy towards what we was doing as well as a plethora of internal conflicts.
This year, The Story So Far has delivered us one of their best albums ever, “Proper Dose”. This album is on par with Under Soil and Dirt + What You Don’t See, at least in my book. Proper Dose was released via Pure Noise records and touches on a lot of the struggles previously mentioned. It talks about Parker Cannon’s issue with lean, his desire to play a different type of music and attempt to move away from the pop punk label, it touches on many of his relationships; platonic as well as romantic. Proper Dose is a roller coaster of a record, and critically speaking, I find this to be the most balanced in terms of songs styles and pacing. The record feels very cohesive, thought out, and planned carefully. I wouldn’t have expected anything less from The Story So Far.
