This is what a severe case of mpox looks like.
Thousands of people have been infected with the deadly virus across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
A new strain of mpox known as clade 1b recently emerged in Kamituga.
The DRC has been waiting on mpox vaccine shipments for weeks, with the first batch arriving in Kinshasa on Thursday. But that’s still thousands of miles away from the hot spot in the east of the country.
Mpox is related to Smallpox but typically causes milder symptoms, including fever, headache and body aches. In severe cases, people can develop painful sores and blisters on the face, chest, hands and genitals.
The outbreak in the DRC has resulted in more than 18,000 suspected cases and 629 deaths so far.
