But in this plot, we’re not planting any trees 🌳
It’s easy to assume that bringing back a forest always means planting. That’s not true.
After a fire, surviving roots and stumps can resprout, while seeds can germinate 🌱
So here, together with our partner GEOTA, we’re letting the forest regenerate naturally and monitoring which vegetation returns.
In areas where natural regeneration isn’t enough, we’ve planted a mix of native trees: 35,000 sweet chestnut trees and 15,000 maritime pines.
Mature, well-managed sweet chestnut trees can slow fire spread, and they can also resprout after burning 🌰Maritime pine can grow in degraded soils, stabilising the land and helping other species return.
Restoration is also about knowing when to plant and when to let the forest recover on its own 💚
