This is one of the most confusing sounds in English:
The T that isnโt really a T ๐
In real spoken English, many T sounds become a flap โ
they sound more like a soft D.
Not because English is โlazyโโฆ
but because this increases our speed and flow.
It happens when the T is:
โขโ โ between two vowels
โขโ โ in unstressed positions
So you donโt hear:
better โ bet-ter
You hear: bedder
water โ wa-ter โ wadder
city โ ci-ty โ cidy
It's a quick tap of the tongue.
