English spelling can be trickyโever notice how words like ๐ข๐ณ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฅ, ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฃ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ฎ, ๐ฉ๐ข๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐บ, ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ค๐ช๐ญ, and ๐ค๐ช๐ณ๐ค๐ถ๐ด all look different but actually share the same vowel sound in unstressed syllables? That sound is called the ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ /ษ/, and itโs the most common vowel in English.
Why does this happen? English is a ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐-๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ, so stressed syllables get more emphasis while unstressed syllables get reducedโoften to the schwa sound. This makes speech faster and smoother, but it also means spelling doesnโt always match pronunciation.
