Lindsay Clancy claims that an external male voice suddenly commanded her to kill her three children and then herself. But the expert testimony we're hearing presents an extraordinary problem for that story: according to Clancy's own account, she'd never heard the voice before, it repeated the same command continuously while she strangled her children, and then abruptly stopped once the last child had been strangled. The expert says that's simply not typical of psychosis.
In today's show, I walk through each problem the expert identifies with Clancy's claimed command hallucination. He explains that psychotic voices are typically not experienced once and never again, are more likely to be intermittent than endlessly repeating like a recording, generally don't disappear simply because the person obeys them, and are often accompanied by delusions. Clancy's account, according to this testimony, doesn't fit those patterns. The expert also says it is not typical for someone experiencing psychosis to hear a command for the first time and immediately obey it.
Then watch what happens when that testimony becomes particularly damaging. Clancy's defense lawyer interrupts and demands a Daubert hearing challenging the scope of the expert's qualifications. The judge isn't persuaded and allows the testimony to continue. I explain why I believe the timing of that objection tells us just how dangerous this testimony is to Clancy's insanity defense.
