Trace Dominguez | This Is How Cable Got So Big (HINT: Technology + Greed) @TraceDominguez | Uploaded 7 years ago | Updated 12 hours ago
In this episode (2 of 3) we pick up where we left off… Incremental advances from radio into television were the staple of the mid-20th century, and then we had a cable television explosion thanks to the new pay-tv model set up by HBO. But what happened next? How did we go from 800 cable systems around the country to a handful?
A lot of this b-roll is in the public domain courtesy Archive.org, the Prelinger Archives, National Film Preservation Foundation, GE and RCA. (Support Archive.org so we can keep saving the history of the internet!) The rest of the b-roll is courtesy HBO, New Line Cinema, Nature, Wikimedia and a few cable companies (which I mention specifically).
