For me, #blackHoles are some of the most intriguing things in all astrophysics! So when a new discovery hits the hot sheets, I get super excited! (Like, even more than usual). According to this new mathematical model, falling into a black hole might not be the crushing, destructive, death sentence we once thought it to be! So what happens?!

Fun aside: When you think of scary things, they're not usually the SMALLER one, right? In black hole science, it definitely is. The giants are gentle for sure. According to Mallary, the smaller black holes have a larger differential between the gravity at your head and gravity at your feet -- she mentioned it could be 1000x different -- which would cause some issues 😆 But, with giant, spinning black holes the gravity differential is FAR less. Which turns out to make a huge difference in survivability of passing through the #singularity.

Quick note: My goal in every video is to make you *feel* something, *think* something, or *talk to a friend* about what you learned. If any of those apply to you, please consider subscribing to the channel, or sharing the video with your friends on social media! A few seconds of effort on your end really goes a long way, and thanks for even reading this paragraph, it means a lot. 💕

Also, if you thought this video could have been better, let me know in the comments! Without your feedback, how can I improve?

This write up by Dr. Khanna, the lead researcher on the paper (below) is wonderful. He’s a great writer and really grasps the mysticalness to the idea of a black hole and crossing the singularity… 😳

P.P.S — Oh man, that match shot was super fun to figure out how to get. First, I found black jacket in the closet and taped it (roughly) to the back of a door across from my “studio” bookshelves. The door would swing into frame if I didn’t close it while shooting, meaning the lights from the bookshelf could brighten up the foreground. Then I used two inverses U-shapes of gaff tape to get a match to stand up on top of a tripod, and tilted the head sideways. I set the camera to 4K @120fps. Matches light so fast there’s no good way to capture them at regular film speed… I set the f-stop to 4 (the lowest this old macro lens would let me go). I did 8 takes just to make sure, but daaaamn that was a fun puzzle, and the footage turned out great!!

Happy 2019 friends and fam! I hope your new year is even better than the last (which, let’s face it in some ways might be easy).

Love you, #nerdfam! Stay #curious!
