The 2022 season has been surprising, to say the least. If we were told that Mercedes would struggle to be on the podium and not win a single race in the first 13 outings, and Verstappen would have 80 points ahead of Leclerc just because of reliability issues of the car and missed tactics, we would’ve laughed. But it is what it is, and the season has truly gone back-and-forth between Red Bull and Ferrari. One particular matter that is very interesting is that Red Bull was much quicker on the straights than Ferrari, but in Austria and France, the Maranello team has proven that they also have a straight-line speed like Red Bull. So, how did they catch up with Red Bull?
First, let’s talk about the season, how it started and how it’s unwinding down. Red Bull has started their first three races with reliability issues, as Verstappen retired in both of them and Perez in the first one. This has caused Ferrari to lead the drivers’ championship by 46 points ahead of Verstappen. However, the season quickly turned in Red Bull’s favor, and before Ferrari started to experience reliability issues, tracks like Jeddah and Miami, and Imola have shown that they are missing something, which is the straight-line speed.
