When it comes to Mercedes, nothing can surprise us anymore. After 8 dominant years at the top of the sport, the team is struggling to keep up with the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari, especially Leclerc and Verstappen, who seem like they are in a league of their own. This situation has started a variety of rumours, one of them being that Hamilton could retire early. The rumour became louder and louder, and the team’s boss, Toto Wolff, shared his thoughts on this matter during the French GP weekend. So, stick with us to find out more.
Lewis Hamilton is a 7-time world champion, winning 6 of his championships with Mercedes and one in his second year in F1 with McLaren. Last year was a really interesting one, full of controversies and drama, as Verstappen won his first championship in the last race at the very last lap. Hamilton was nowhere to be seen after what happened in Abu Dhabi, and many believed he would retire after that. Even Wolff himself said that he doesn’t have high hopes that Hamilton will have the motivation and strength to come back to the sport after what happened in Abu Dhabi.
However, Hamilton posted a picture of him at the Grand Canyon, with a caption: I’ve been gone. Now I’m back. This weekend, Hamilton has notched his 300th GP start, and it resulted in the best finishing order for him this season, at P2.
