This moment changed the way I thought about Silence of the Lambs.
I got to rewatch the movie on the big screen in 4K (thanks to the Somerville Theater for the screening) and this brief interaction between Clarice and Hannibal stood out. I think it’s a way to actually downplay the trope of the “trans maniac” that was pervasive in Hollywood and horror for many years.
Hannibal clearly outlines Buffalo Bill’s true psyche, one that comes from trauma and hating himself. He’s tried to be many things - this is just another one in a long line.
As Clarice says, there’s no research to suggest trans individuals are any more violent than any other group. It’s a brilliant exchange, maybe 2 or 3 lines tops, that changes the way that character of Buffalo Bill should be viewed and how the movie should be perceived as a whole.
PS - Silence of the Lambs still kicks ass after all these years. The pacing is insanely quick and the movie flies by because of how great everyone is. Anthony Hopkins is an absolute legend, and Jodie Foster should be leading the FBI in every timeline.
