This single bag of Wickson Apples, Cross pollinated with a red fleshed apple named Rubaiyat, will probably populate the category of desert crabs with many new excellent varieties. This cross when made in the past, has been throwing excellent offspring. It is interesting that while dessert crabs like Chestnut, Wickson and Centenial are much loved by apple nerds and most other people that tastes them, there are actually very few of them. I feel quite sure that we will have many, perhapse dozens or even more, of new worthwhile apples in this category coming out over the next 10 years. I have noticed that certain crosses tend to produce a higher number of good seedlings than others, and this is appearing to be one of them. I have three seedling trees of this cross in a row in my trial rows, one of which is already named, Cherub, another excellent one that will probably be named and released after another fruiting season or two, and one more red fleshed small flat apple that is very promising. If they all end up being as good as I think they will, and you were to do the math on the common misconception that it takes thousands of apple seedlings to get a good apple, the odds would be insanely low that I would get three good apples in a row. It's a myth.
I will grow a lot of these seeds out and sell the others this winter. I also have a large number of Wickson seeds this year crossed with two other Red Fleshed apples, that I also grew from seed, Appleoosa and Black Strawberry as well as many naturally pollinated wickson seeds. I've said it from the beginning and now I know I'm right, plant more Wickson seeds! The best dessert crabs in the world are yet to come! Seed sales are during winter and patrons get early access.
