I use quite a few leaves from the forest in my garden, and especially partially decayed leaf duff. This is a simple idea that really works well to concentrate leaves using gravity and natural phenomena. I like sifted forest duff for dressing seed beds. It is fine enough for small seedlings to grow through if put on sparingly. The small flat pieces of leaf do a good job of protecting the soil from being hammered by rain drops, preventing the crusting effect. It also contains a lot of natural microbes that should be beneficial to our plants and gardens.
