Seven years ago, we explored a French manor that has been on the back of our minds ever since. So we went back and almost nothing had changed. The gate was hanging wide open, every single door unlocked, and inside, a house frozen in time: a carved stone above the entrance dated 1639, music books, notebooks full of handwritten law studies, and the belongings of a family that lived behind these walls for almost four hundred years.
His name was Étienne, a chemist, and instead of chasing a career in Paris he came home and turned the family manor into a private laboratory. He had one obsession: the scent of the violet, a fragrance so difficult to capture that it took 33,000 kilos of flowers to make a single kilo of oil, and one so strange it disappears while you're smelling it. What he worked out inside this house may still linger in the perfumes people wear today. But around 2009, everything here went silent — no heirs, no explanation, and one last letter addressed to a name we didn't expect. This time, we think we finally figured out what happened.
