Fatekeeper is a dark, brutal, bloody first person action RPG in early access, and honestly, for 10 bucks this thing surprised me.
I went in expecting some jank. You get some of that. The audio balance is rough, the voices are way too quiet compared to the music, and I did manage to fall through the world thanks to a terrain bug. Early access is early access. That part is real.
But the actual game? I liked it a lot more than I expected.
The combat has weight. Two handed weapons actually feel like they are smashing into something instead of just waving through air. Death matters. If you screw around, the game will punish you for it. Swing at the floorboard you are standing on and you can absolutely destroy it and drop yourself into a bad time. I love that kind of thing.
It also has a pretty interesting skill tree, alchemy system, telekinesis, exploration that actually gives you stuff for poking around, and a very old school kind of difficulty. I would not call this Skyrim. People are going to compare it to Skyrim because it is first person fantasy, but that comparison is going to set the wrong expectations. This is much more linear, much more focused, and much more about brutal combat than open world freedom.
Story-wise, I’m lost. Completely. It feels like the characters know way more than the player does, and I spent most of the first hour wondering who the rat is, who the narrator is, what the hell the Moon Gate is, and why everyone is acting like I should already understand any of this. That may be intentional. I’m interested enough to keep playing and find out.
For 10 dollars, this is an easy recommend if you like brutal first person RPG combat, early access rough edges, and games that are willing to punish you for playing sloppy.
