Making sure vegetables have enough space to reach maturity is essential to getting a good crop.
With lettuce, Millie sows the seed quite thickly then, after they germinate, she thins out seedlings to about 5cm apart. They will eventually need more space, but they are still quite vulnerable and might be eaten or lost, so she leaves them thicker than needed for a while longer.
