EUROCONTROL’s #thinkNetwork video on mitigating adverse weather explains why adverse summer weather creates uncertainty, delays, and cross-border bottlenecks - hugely impacting air traffic flows in the network. Adverse weather was responsible for nearly 50% of all air traffic flow management delays over June, July, and August in 2024. EUROCONTROL now has trained meteorological experts working in our Network Manager Operations Centre to better anticipate the impact of weather on air traffic operations in the Network and our pre-tactical team uses a playbook of pre-agreed scenarios through the Collaborative Decision-Making (CDM) process to mitigate the network impact of weather-induced disruptions.
Mitigating adverse weather is one of five priorities EUROCONTROL encourages aviation to focus on as we prepare for busy summer traffic together. The other priorities consist of prioritising first rotation, disciplined flight plan execution to ensure predictability, delivering agreed capacities, and realistic schedules including turnaround times.
The explainer videos come as part of EUROCONTROL‘s 🧠✈️ #thinkNetwork campaign to optimise the management of busy summer air traffic across the European aviation network. EUROCONTROL has also made available a webtool and a comprehensive guide for flight dispatchers, pilots, air traffic controllers, flow management positions and airports to ensure aviation organisations consider these priorities.
