Back in March, April and May 2024, the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub, located near Paris, welcomed air traffic controllers and experts from DHMI, the Turkish ANSP, to perform a real-time simulation of the Antalya Airport redesign which will be operational after completing extensive expansion works that started in 2022.
🏗️ The expansion project includes a redesigned terminal control area (TMA) with independent parallel runway operations as well as a new airport layout including new aprons, parking positions and taxiways and, for the first time in Antalya airport's history, the implementation of multiple centrelines.
The redesigned TMA was addressed with the Antalya TMA real-time simulation, which took place in parallel at the EIH.
🎯 The objective of the Antalya Tower simulation was to assess the impact of the airport layout changes on ground ATC operations and familiarise air traffic controllers with new procedures as well as to define new solutions addressing potential future traffic increases.
The simulation also provided an opportunity for Antalya Tower controllers to work with an advanced surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) which has significantly advanced functionalities compared to the current system. This enabled them to evaluate the future way of working, which should help them handle the increasing operational workload.
💡 At the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub, this kind of project is carried out by a multidisciplinary team of validation, operational and technical experts.
The simulation preparation lasted for 6 months, while the exercise phase lasted for 6 weeks. This will now be followed by the results analysis phase and the production of a detailed report.
