Jacob Mitchell thinks differently. He had to when the school system failed him and he needed to learn. Discovering the power of music to aid memory and comprehension for his own learning, led him as a teacher to appreciate why the content in class needs to relate not only kids’ passions but also their individual learning styles. His character MC Grammar, now a successful TV performer on SkyKids ‘Wonder Raps’, started life in his own classroom and expanded to phenomenal success on YouTube and now makes live appearances that bring new ways of learning to thousands of children worldwide. He also teaches educators. And presents the annual pitch competition at the Children’s Media Conference!
In a free-ranging conversation with Ger Graus, Jacob is passionate about the need for change in the way the education system uses screen-based media. He also has powerful ideas about how media can best serve the needs of the young audience. It’s about courage - amongst educators and makers - to embrace the new.
