In this piano tutorial I look at different ways of thinking about melodic improvisation to help you produce more natural-sounding right-hand lines. The material in the tutorial is jazz-based, but the underlying principle - 'think horizontal' - works for pretty much every genre of improvised music on the piano.

The basic idea is to get away from thinking about 'one chord after another' and which scale 'fits' which chord and move towards thinking at a phrase level. The tutorial contains two specific techniques for developing phrase-level improvisation skills, plus the usual detailed walkthrough (left hand, chords, scales and techniques used) of the piano improvisation.
