St Patrick’s Day is celebrated all over the world, but a lot of what people think they know about it isn’t actually true. In this video I break down some of the weird lies people believe about St Patrick’s Day, from the famous story of Saint Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland to the surprising truth about where Saint Patrick was actually born.
Most people assume Saint Patrick was Irish, but historians believe he was born in Roman Britain, likely somewhere around modern-day Wales, before being kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. The real history of St Patrick is far stranger than the parades, green beer, and shamrock hats we associate with the holiday today.
We’ll also look at the myth that Saint Patrick literally drove snakes out of Ireland (spoiler: Ireland didn’t actually have snakes after the Ice Age), the legendary story of the shamrock explaining the Holy Trinity, and why calling it “St Patty’s Day” drives Irish people absolutely mad.
