In these environments, God is portrayed not as loving or gracious, but only as wrathful and punishing. There’s no space for growth, sanctification, or learning. It’s all fear-based obedience: follow the leader strictly, or face divine consequences.

And painfully, this fear is emotional, spiritual, and has practical implications. In Mary's case, those she knew who left the group reported suddenly losing jobs and homes or experiencing other hardships. Notably, they weren’t church employees, raising questions: Were these coincidences? Or did the leader use her social influence to harm those who left?

That manipulation of perception and authority becomes another layer of control.
