In this session, Michael Mayes presents his findings of Oklahoma’s tiny stand-alone jails and their significance from 1904 to 1940. The session will give historical context relating to Indian Territory and Oklahoma statehood regarding the early development of holding facilities for local communities and the planning and development of those facilities.
Michael Mayes is the survey coordinator for the Oklahoma Historical Society State Historic Preservation Office. This session was part of “Perspectives in History”: The Oklahoma History Conference, presented on May 4, 2024, at the Oklahoma History Center.
